Skin Cancer Checks & Screening
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Australia, with our nation experiencing some of the highest rates of melanoma in the world. Fortunately, when caught early, skin cancer is highly treatable. Regular professional skin checks and advanced skin cancer screening are essential to protecting your health.
At Western Skin Institute, our experienced doctors provide comprehensive skin cancer checks at both of our modern clinics in St Albans and North Melbourne. Whether you require a routine full body mole map or have a single spot of concern, our dedicated medical teams are here to give you total peace of mind.
Our Skin Cancer Screening Services
Comprehensive Full Body Skin Checks
A full body skin check is the single best way to evaluate your overall skin health and screen for hidden skin cancers. For your absolute comfort and privacy, you will leave your underwear on during the assessment. Our skin doctors will thoroughly examine your skin from head to toe, tracking any atypical moles or suspicious spots that require monitoring or immediate treatment.
While skin in the breast, genital, and buttock areas is not routinely examined, skin cancers can still develop in these sun protected regions. If you have a specific lesion or spot of concern in these areas, please let our team know so your doctor can safely examine it.
Targeted Spot & Mole Checks
If you are short on time, have specific privacy preferences, or only want to check a single changing spot, we offer targeted mole and spot checks. While a partial evaluation is not as comprehensive as a thorough full body skin check, it is an excellent option for monitoring a dynamic, itching, or newly formed spot that has recently caught your attention.
Advanced Digital Dermoscopy & Skin Analytics
To ensure the highest standard of early detection, Western Skin Institute utilises the HEINE Cube, one of the world's most advanced digital skin analytics and mole mapping software systems.
What to Expect During Your Skin Check
-
Visual Assessment: Your doctor will first inspect your skin without instruments to look for broad patterns or standout spots.
-
Digital Dermoscopy: A handheld dermatoscope is used to look deep into the pigment structure of specific spots.
-
HEINE Cube Recording: Any spots of interest are securely logged, tracked, and analysed digitally using advanced analytics.
-
Biopsy & Treatment: If a spot looks suspicious, your doctor may recommend a biopsy or schedule a minor procedure. This is typically booked for a separate, dedicated appointment.
-
Therapeutic Options: If a skin cancer is detected, our clinics are fully equipped to handle advanced skin cancer surgery, plastic surgery closures, or skin cancer light treatments (Photodynamic Therapy).
Patient Preparation Tip: To help our doctors perform the most thorough examination possible, please do not wear any makeup (especially foundation) or tinted nail polish to your consultation. No specialist referral is needed to book a skin cancer check.
