Medical Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

In the field of medical dermatology, autologous regenerative therapies offer highly sophisticated pathways for tissue repair and cellular restoration. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy utilises the concentrated healing power of your own blood to naturally stimulate tissue repair, accelerate collagen synthesis, and support hair follicle vitality.

At Western Skin Institute, our independent practitioners perform evidence based PRP treatments at both our St Albans and North Melbourne medical clinics. Because PRP is entirely autologous (derived from your own body), it carries an exceptional safety profile, eliminating the risk of local allergic reactions, hypersensitivity, or foreign body rejection.

The Clinical Collection & Processing Protocol

The extraction and isolation of high quality, viable platelets require strict compliance with clinical protocols to prevent cellular damage.

1. Autologous Blood Collection: 10 min.

A small volume of whole blood is drawn from your arm by a qualified clinician, following standard, hygienic phlebotomy procedures identical to a routine health check.

2. Precision Centrifugation: 15 min.

The tubes containing the drawn blood are immediately placed into a calibrated medical centrifuge. It is spun under a strictly regulated speed and duration protocol to safeguard the delicate cell membranes.

3. Cellular Separation: 5 min.

The centripetal force separates the blood components into distinct density layers, isolating red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelet concentrated plasma.

4. Harvesting the Platelet Matrix: 5 min.

The clear, highly concentrated plasma fraction—containing a 3 fold to 7 fold increase in resting blood platelets, is meticulously drawn off from the appropriate tube layer for targeted therapeutic delivery.

What is the Clinical Evidence for PRP in Dermatology?

Dermatological research has demonstrated significant innovations regarding the utility of PRP, particularly for managing hair thinning, structural acne scarring, and deep skin rejuvenation:

  • Androgenetic Alopecia (Pattern Thinning): Systematic efficacy reviews indicate that an initial protocol of 1 PRP session every 4 weeks (for a total of 3 sessions) exhibits greater efficacy over placebo in stabilising hair drop, increasing hair strand diameter, and promoting density in pattern hair loss sufferers.

  • Acne Scar Remodelling: Clinical data demonstrates improvements in deep atrophic scar severity when 2 to 4 PRP sessions are integrated as an adjunct therapy alongside traditional clinical interventions, such as medical microneedling or fractional lasers.

  • Dermal Rejuvenation: PRP application has been shown to improve the structural severity of deep nasolabial folds, reverse advanced signs of photoaging (sun damage), and improve overall colour homogeneity across the face.
